Like all things local, Hawaii’s homegrown sound is simple and unpretentious, an ideal balance of diversity, coolness, and a proper reverence to pioneers like uncle Bob Marley. I suppose this is why listening to island music fills me with something akin to a spiritual Kanak-Attack… you know, that surreal sensation of sitting back, closing my eyes (unless I’m driving!), and enjoying the present moment.
On October 12, 1972, I won the lottery. Which one? The one who’s grand prize was to be born on Maui, Earth’s real-life Garden of Eden. I was born here, raised here, and you better believe I plan on dying here! Tell me, what did we all do in our past lives to deserve this place? Probably nothing. That being said, I suppose the only true response to winning such a jackpot is to be generous with it. To share what this place has given me, freely and with a smile.
May as well start with some music!
